“Volunteering for Home-Start has opened up a whole new world to me”

Volunteers at Home-Start Trafford, Salford and Wigan

For over 21 years, local Home-Start volunteers have been offering emotional and practical support to families.

Why? Because parenting can be hard for so many reasons. From dealing with poverty and isolation to poor mental health and relationship breakdowns. All these issues can affect a parent’s ability to cope.

And this is where Home-Start steps in.

Our volunteers offer a mixture of practical and emotional, non-judgemental support, for however long a family needs them. Our volunteers also empower parents to make changes, to forge links in their local community and access specialist services if needed. But more than anything, our volunteers are there as a regular, friendly face, an extra pair of hands and a shoulder to cry on.

Our course is designed to be informative and fun as well as to answer any questions you may have. Subjects covered include:

  • What it means to be a home-visiting volunteer
  • Family life: stresses and strains
  • Attitudes and values

  • Safeguarding children

  • Support and personal safety

By the end of the course you will have a better insight into the work of Home-Start and feel well prepared for home-visiting.

All expenses incurred both during the preparation course and on home-visiting are reimbursed.

All volunteers can expect the continued support of the Managing Director, Co-ordinators and the Board of Trustees.

We are changing the way we are delivering our volunteer preparation training courses, we have created some e-learning modules that can be done in the comfort of your own home which will enable us to reduce face to face delivery training from 6 days to 2 days or from 10 evenings to 4 evenings.
